On September 16-20, a big event took place at FECIAR - the 13th Congress of Russian Hydrobiological Society (RHS). The event is held every five years, this year it is dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as to the 5th anniversary of RHS's Arkhangelsk Branch of RAS, and is held within the framework of the LIII Lomonosov Readings. More than 250 specialists from Russia, Belarus and Azerbaijan gathered to discuss contemporary problems and challenges of studying and preserving aquatic ecosystems. The main challenges faced by scientists are related to the growing destructive anthropogenic impact. Among others, the issues of studying the Russian Arctic waters were raised.
MMBI RAS specialists also took part in the Congress. The plenary sessionof the Congress' third day - together with the distinguished colleague from ZIN RAS, Corresponding Member of RAS Sergey Golubkov - was conducted by MMBI Plankton Laboratory Chief Reasercher Professor Pavel Makarevich. Pavel Robertovich also started the section “Populations and communities of hydrobionts in aquatic ecosystems” with his report “Structure of microalgae community in the marginal ice zone of the Barents Sea during seasonal ice intensive formation”.
Pavel Vashchenko, an MMBI Plankton Laboratory researcher, presented a report on “Experience of Aerial Photography Application for Assessment of Stocks and Distribution of Littoral Algae in Murman Conditions” in the section “Structure and Functioning of Aquatic Ecosystems”. Poster reports were presented by Candidate of biological sciences Veronika Vodopyanova (“Influence of seasonal pycnocline on vertical distribution of some components of planktonic communities of the Barents Sea”) and Anastasia Vashchenko (“Abundance indicators and peculiarities of distribution of pelagic bacteria of the north-eastern part of the Barents Sea in the autumn period”).
We thank our colleagues from FECIAR for holding such a significant event at a high level.
