Security of Arctic Frontiers: Part V

On October 30-31, the V International Scientific and Practical Conference "Security of Arctic Frontiers: Ecology, History, Images of the Future" was held in Murmansk in MMBI RAS. The Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, MMBI RAS and the Ministry of Arctic Development and Economy of the Murmansk Region acted as co-organizers. The event commemorates the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi troops in the Arctic and the liberation of the territory of Northern Norway by Soviet troops.

The opening and moderation of the conference was conducted by Denis Moiseev, Chairman of the Murmansk Regional Branch of RGS, Deputy Director for Science. Professor Gennady Matishov, Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, MMBI RAS Director Mikhail Makarov and Nikolai Korchunov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in Norway, made welcoming remarks.

Among the speakers were representatives of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, MMBI RAS, KSC RAS, FSBI "VNIIOkeangeologia", Rosatmoflot, Arktikugol, the Northern Fleet, the Prosecutor's Office of the Murmansk Region, The Polar Research Institute of China. In addition to the main topic, the participants discussed such important topics as oil spills at sea, international cooperation and research between Russia and China in the Arctic latitudes, and the development of the Northern Sea Route.
