Russian Scientists Study Arctic "Life Oasis"

9 декабря 2024

Researchers have identified an area in the southwestern East Siberian Sea with anomalously high water temperatures and elevated salinity for the Arctic region, formed by submarine hydrothermal vents. The team also documented thermophilic species uncharacteristic for northern seas — the hermit crab Pagurus capillatus and krill Thysanoessa. These observations provide the first explanation for the emergence of a warm-water "life oasis" in one of the planet's coldest seas. The study, supported by Russian Science Foundation grants №22-17-35012 and №23-17-00121, was published in "Communications Earth & Environment" journal.

MMBI RAS zoobenthos laboratory researcher Olga Zimina participated in the study. Details are available on the "Habr" portal.
