First Deputy Director of MMBI RAS, Professor Pavel Makarevich (Doctor of Biological Sciences), and Deputy Director for Science Denis Moiseev (Candidate of Geographical Sciences) participated in the annual reporting conference "Results of Expedition Studies in 2023 in the World Ocean and Inland Waters, Svalbard Archipelago and Kamchatka Peninsula," held at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation from February 27-29 this year.

The conference brought together leaders of marine research expeditions, representatives of institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of the Russian Federation. Participants presented results of expedition work conducted in 2023 in the World Ocean, internal sea waters, territorial sea, exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of the Russian Federation aboard research vessels under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, as well as within the framework of the integrated expedition program in Svalbard and the "Floating University" program.

Doctor of Biological Sciences Pavel Makarevich delivered a report titled " Integrated Ecosystem Research by MMBI RAS aboard R/V Dalnie Zelentsy in 2023," informing conference participants that in 2023, Murmansk Marine Biological Institute conducted five integrated marine expeditions aboard R/V Dalnie Zelentsy totaling 117 vessel-days under the national project "Science and Universities." Scientists from Murmansk Arctic University, St. Petersburg Branch of the IO RAS, St. Petersburg State University, Lomonosov Moscow State University Marine Research Center (LMSU MRC), and Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute participated alongside MMBI researchers.

The speaker reported that expedition research yielded new baseline data on marine ecosystems in the Barents, Kara and Greenland Seas, which are crucial for predicting negative impacts of anthropogenic and climatic factors on Arctic marine ecosystems overall.

MMBI RAS Deputy Director for Science, Candidate of Geographical Sciences Denis Moiseev, in his report "Key Results of Integrated Studies of Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems in the Svalbard Archipelago Area (2007-2023)," presented research on pelagic planktonic viruses in archipelago waters, zooplankton studies, and geomorphological, geochronological and lithological investigations of the proglacial lake Bretjørna (Ice Lake) in western Spitsbergen. The speaker noted that collected data and samples provide a foundation for new insights about natural processes occurring in the archipelago's ecosystems.
