Zhuravleva Nonna Georgievna
10.03.1946 – 23.04.2024

Dear colleagues, it is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our esteemed colleague, Leading Researcher and Doctor of Biological Sciences Nonna Georgievna Zhuravleva, during the night of April 22–23.

Nonna Georgievna dedicated 55 years of her life to MMBI RAS, beginning her journey in 1969 as a full-time postgraduate student at the Institute. After completing her education in 1972, she joined as a Junior Researcher. In 1974, she defended her Candidate of Sciences dissertation in embryology and histology. From 1976 to 1978, she served as the Institute’s Scientific Secretary, and from 1979 to 1997, as a Senior Researcher. In 1989, she was awarded the title of Senior Researcher by the Higher Attestation Commission. In 1997, Nonna Georgievna successfully defended her Doctor of Sciences dissertation and became a Leading Researcher in the Laboratory of Ichthyology and Physiology, a position she held until her passing.

Throughout her career, Nonna Georgievna made significant contributions not only to fundamental marine and experimental biology but also to applied research in fish mariculture, which held great importance for the national economy. In 1979, she achieved a breakthrough by successfully rearing viable juvenile flounder in the Murmansk region. For her pioneering work in developing breeding techniques for flounder and cod, she was awarded bronze medals at the USSR Exhibition of Economic Achievements in 1983 and 1987. Her foundational research laid the groundwork for mariculture in the Arctic, including her direct involvement in the biological feasibility studies for commercial Atlantic salmon farming in Pechenga Bay of the Barents Sea. She also mentored numerous early-career scientists, supervising graduate students and research fellows.

We have lost an exceptional scientist, a torchbearer of the North’s academic traditions, and a kindred spirit to many at MMBI. For countless colleagues Nonna Georgievna was not just a mentor but also a dear friend. Her passing leaves an irreplaceable void. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. Her memory will forever remain in our hearts.
