Murmansk Hosts Conference Celebrating 100 Years of Barentsburg

On March 15, the scientific-practical conference "Cultural and Historical Heritage of the Arctic. Russian Presence Settlements in Scientific Focus" took place aboard the nuclear icebreaker Lenin in Murmansk. The event marked the 100th anniversary of Barentsburg, organized by the Arktikugol State Trust's Museum and Exhibition Center with support from the Murmansk Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, MMBI RAS, and Murmansk's Nuclear Information Center.

Arctic researchers from Murmansk Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, Kola Branch of the Geophysical Service RAS, Polar Geophysical Institute, Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute, Research Centre for Human Adaptation in the Arctic and MMBI RAS participated in the event.

The event opened with an online greeting from Yuri Fedorovich Sychev, Deputy General Director of Arktikugol for Scientific Organizations. Denis Moiseev, Deputy Director for Science at MMBI (Cand. Geogr. Sci.), presented "MMBI's Ecosystem Research in the Svalbard Area". Andrey Fedorov's (Kola Branch of the Geophysical Service RAS) report on long-term seismological observations in the archipelago drew particular interest. The audience responded most enthusiastically to Natalia Belisheva's (KSC RAS) presentation on medical-biological research in Svalbard. The conference concluded with researchers sharing personal memories of living and working in the archipelago.
