XXVII Conference of Young Scientists
Murmansk Marine Biological Institute KSC RAS

May 13, 2009 in Murmansk at the base of the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute with support from the Department of Biological Sciences of RAS and the Ministry of economic development of Murmansk region XXVII Conference of Young Scientists, RAS MMBI was carried out.

There were 67 people at the conference. 30 reports submitted by young scientists, graduate students and students MMBI KSC RAS, Southern Research Center, Polar Research Institute Marine Fisheries and Oceanography by the name of N.M. Knipovich, Moscow State University, Murmansk State Technical University were heard and discussed.

By the beginning of the conference XXVII Conference Young Scientists of the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (Murmansk, May 2009). Murmansk: MMBI RAS, 2009. 190p. materials were published.

Сonference was opened by the Deputy Director of the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute KSC RAS, Doctor of Biological Sciences P.R. Makarevich.

In his welcoming speech, PR Makarevich said that the Institute for more than a quarter of century, was a leading research team, which is actively seeking to hire young people, gives them an opportunity to engage immediately to all major activities of the Institute, provides unlimited prospects for scientific growth. However, as PR Makarevich stressed, at this delicate stage of social development for the Russian Academy of Sciences education and practical skills of young scientists are very important. Therefore, the purpose of youth forums organized by the Institute is to improve the professional skills of young scientists and graduate students, develop their creative activity.

Quick response from the audience was called by the report of a junior researcher of algology Laboratory DV Pugovkin, he studied the role of biological factor in the treatment of sea waters from oil (hydrocarbon) pollution, symbiotic relationship between macrophytes of Barents Sea and hydrocarbon bacteria. The author found that surface of thalli and fucus and laminaria hydrocarbon-oxidazing bacteria live, which numbers may increase sharply with increasing concentration of hydrocarbons in their habitat, a complex of microorganism - algae is directly involved in the process of natural purification of the environment, occurring in the zone of Fucus algae growth.

Young scientists presented research results about Norwegian, Barents Sea, Azov and Caspian seas, Spitsbergen archipelagos, Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land. Experimental data on the biology, ecology, physiology, biochemistry was discussed on the conference. Traditionally, an important place in the reports was given to the influence of global and local anthropogenic impacts on biota, deals with modern methodological approaches using GIS technology in the study of abiotic environmental factors were also specified.

An interesting report about the largest mainland seabird colonies of Murman and prospects of their existence in 2008 was presented by the researcher of the laboratory of ornithology and parasitology AV Ezhov. His findings in the three largest continental bird colonies in 2008, indicate unfavorable trophic conditions in places of settlement of birds throughout the Murman coast. The presence of a sufficient number of catering sites directly affects the number of colonies. This is especially devastating for guillemot, villagers in the western part of the Russian area, where the absence of previously observed regular approaches aggregations of pelagic fish, has the strongest negative impact.

A research assistant in the laboratory benthic AM Ilyushchenko reported the results of an experiment about identifying the histomorphological changes in the excretory gland in the red king crab Paralithodes samtschaticus during starvation. As a result of histological studies revealed some morphological changes in the prostate experienced crabs: a tubular system there is an increase in clearance and destruction of the canal wall with desquamation of epithelium in the canal antrum, in the glomerular system there is a destruction of the glomerular epithelium and glomeruli lose their normal density.

Analysis of large dominant species of copepods was presented in the report of the laboratory researcher of plankton VG Dvoretsky, copepods are a whole show in forming of nutritive base of ichthyoplankton and juvenile fish in the eastern part of the Barents Sea in 2006. As it was established thermophilic species Calanus finmarchicus dominated in the complex of copepods in 2006 near the Novaya Zemlya. The speaker suggested that this phenomenon is associated with a strong influx of warm Atlantic waters in the Barents Sea in 2006.

Report of the research worker IV Berchenko was dedicated to the description of zooplankton in the northern waters - inland waters of the Spitsbergen archipelago, its qualitative and quantitative characteristics and peculiarities of vertical distribution, seasonal status of the community. He found that the greatest contribution to the overall size of the zooplankton community of this area of the Barents Sea make Calanus glacialis, Pseudocalanus elongatus, Oithona similis, naupliar stages of copepods and meroplankton form. Moreover, nauplii of copepods are more than 40% of the total. Comparison of the internal waters of the archipelago with the adjacent shelf, showed higher productivity of Norway.

Total subjects of the report of XXVII Conference of Young Scientists MMBI KSC RAS affected a wide range of problems associated with the study of nature in the Arctic.

In the report discussion leading scientists MMBI KSC RAS took part. High scientific level of most reports, good presentation, in-depth knowledge of the issues as illuminated by young scientists and specialists of the Institute, and graduate student base chairs was noticed. The presentations focused on the current requirements to the level and volume of professional knowledge of scientists nominated by quickly reaching scientific and technological progress. For graduates were reminded that, starting their work in academia, they should be able to integrate quickly into the international research, technical and investment projects, proficient in foreign languages. It was stressed that the research works of participants in their area, level of solving scientific problems indicate a significant scientific capacity among young scholars and students. In presentations the most favorite reports were highlighted: D.V. Pugovkin, N.E. Kasatkina, O.V. Kokin, A.B. Ezhov, I.V. Berchenko, V.G. Dvoretsky, A.M. Ilyushchenko, T.V. Minzyuk, N.E. Kisova. The speakers were given wishes and instructions that encouraged them to stick to the time limit, to formulate aims and objectives of research works more carefully.

As a result of creative contest among employees of MMBI, the winners were: D.V. Pugovkin, A.V. Ezhov, N.E. Kisova, V.G. Dvoretsky, A.M. Ilyushchenko.
