From July 12 to 20, MMBI Algology Laboratory researchers, Maria Klindukh and Inna Ryzhik, conducted work on Kildin Island as part of a complex expedition. The main goal of the expedition was to restore the military graves of the defenders of the Kola Arctic who died during the Great Patriotic War.
During the expedition, our specialists completed several routes along the coast of the island (in the western and eastern parts), covering over 100 km. In the course of the work, they studied the state of coastal phytocenoses (species composition, distribution), paid attention to the features of phytocenoses in the splash zone, and documented the distribution of storm-cast algae in the littoral zone of the coast. To assess the ecological state of plants in the intertidal zone, they conducted 24-hour measurements of physiological indicators (respiration and fluorescence).
In addition to research work, the laboratory staff also took part in restorational activities of military graves.
Senior Researchers Inna Ryzhik shared her impressions of the expedition:
The unusual landscapes of the island, the skuas calling at night, and rumors of bears roaming the island left a very pleasant impression. I would also like to note a very warm, friendly atmosphere that prevailed on the island during the expedition, which was not dampened by strong winds and not always warm weather.
We express our gratitude to our expedition colleagues and the Northern Fleet for organizing, assisting in the research, and providing the opportunity to participate in the expedition. Also, to the Murmansk Regional Branch of the RGS, especially the expedition organizer Irina Mkhitaryan.
