Born in 1945.
In 1962 he graduated from high school Kagalnitskaya Azov district, in 1967 — Rostov State University.
In 1967-1968 — Private of 12040 Baku Air Defense District division.
From 1968 he worked at the Polar Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography.
In the years 1974-1983 — Chairman of the Regional Council of Young Scientists, a member of the Council of Young Scientists of the Central Committee of Komsomol.
In 1980 in Moscow Lomonosov State University defended his doctoral dissertation "glacial and periglacial topography of the ocean floor".
From 1981 he is the present director of the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute KSC RAS Azov branch.
In 1990 he was elected a corresponding member of USSR Academy of Sciences with a degree in ecology of the sea by the General Biology branch, USSR Academy of Sciences.
In 1997 he was elected as an academician of Academy of Sciences in degree in oceanography by Oceanology, geography and physics of the atmosphere division.
In 2000-2004 — Deputy Chairman of the Kola Science Centre of RAS.
In 2002-2003 — Organizer SSC RAN.
Since 2003 — Chairman of the Southern Scientific Center, Russian Academy of Sciences.
He was awarded the "Sign of Honor", "Honor", "Over the sea Services", Diploma of the Russian Geographical Society for outstanding scientific work in geography, Prize in the name of O.Y.Schmidt for the cycle of works on paleogeography, ecology, biology and oceanography of the Arctic seas.
He is the winner of the Government of the Russian Federation Award in 2005 in the field of science and technology.
