Governing Council of the Russian Geographical Society decided to award director of Murmansk Marine Biological Institute Kola Scientific Center Russian Academy of Sciences academician Gennady Matishov with Gold Medal n.a. F.P. Litke.

The medal is awarded "for works on physical and economic geography of the oceans and seas, geography of polar countries, land hydrology, glaciology, permafrost, geophysics, hydrobiology, meteorology and climatology".

Academician G.G. Matishov is an outstanding scientist of world renown. His research interests cover such areas of marine geology and biology as topography of the bottom of the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, ocean interglacial, theory of large marine ecosystems, environmental and radiation monitoring, ecosystem dynamics, fish production and biological resources, biogeocoenoses fisheries and oil and gas industries impact assessment, engineering and environmental surveys, biotechnical systems.

Gold Medal n.a. F.P. Litke was established in 1873 and is awarded to outstanding Russian scientists-geographers. Over the years, medals were awarded to: K.M. Staritskiy (1874), A.I. Vilkitsky (1891), N.M. Knipovich (1902), K.M. Deriugin (1925), L.A. Zenkevich (1956), V.R. Fuchs (2014), and others.

The ceremony of awarding will take place in the framework of the II Festival of the Society at the Central House of Artists on November, 5 in 14.00.
